The children, aged two and five, were found with stab wounds to the neck and chest in an apartment in the city of Tolyatti in the Samara region, the investigation committee announced.

The suspected minor had been admitted to a psychiatric ward. In Moscow, the head of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin (71), took over the investigation into the crime.

The crime is said to have occurred while the parents were making a statement to the police about domestic violence.

Media portals close to the state reported that the mother had initially separated from the father of the girls who have now been killed, but then took him back in. The dead girls were from the man's first marriage.

By killing her half-siblings, the daughter wanted to prevent the couple from continuing to live together. The age of criminal responsibility for murder in Russia is 14.
