Tragic kayak accident in Tyrol: 24-year-old from Hanover killed in an accident
St. Veit in Defereggen (Austria) - Three kayakers have had an accident on a whitewater river in the Tyrolean mountains - one of them died. A second suffered injuries, according to the Austrian police. The third was able to bring himself to safety.

The men, aged 31, 24 and 24, were traveling on the Schwarzach in East Tyrol. In the St. Veit in Defereggen area, two of them capsized due to a tree trunk that had become stuck in the river.
According to the police, the oldest was able to rescue himself from the water. A 24-year-old who had also capsized was also able to get out of his boat. The injured man held on to a tree stump in the river. He was rescued by a helicopter using a rope and flown to hospital.
The other 24-year-old had not capsized, a police spokeswoman told the German Press Agency. But after he got out of his kayak, he was swept away by the white water. Firefighters rescued him about five kilometers downstream. An emergency doctor tried in vain to resuscitate the young man. He died where he was found.
More than 70 emergency services from the fire department, water rescue, the Red Cross and the police were involved in the operation.
