Driven by falling sales, the new CEO of the US company, Brian Niccol (50), announced in an interview with"CNBC" on Thursday that employees in the coffee shops will be writing their own names on the coffee cups again in future.

Years ago, Starbucks employees often made customers laugh with their self-scribbled inscriptions.

The company would like to return to this type of customer relationship.

However, Niccol did not say whether coffee lovers will soon be able to enjoy their own name on the cup again. He merely spoke of "little notes" that are written on the drink with felt-tip pens.

The Starbucks CEO also hinted at how many pens would now have to be purchased to realize the project: "The number I heard was about 200,000."
