The text messages, sent anonymously and vilely addressing slavery, were reported in several states.

Although the texts varied slightly, the gist remained the same: recipients were asked to board a bus that would supposedly take them to a "plantation" where they would work as slaves.

As New York Post reports, the text messages were primarily directed at school children and young college students. Both the FBI and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are now looking into the matter.

A press release from the FCC states that the messages were part of a nationwide campaign targeting people of color after the U.S. election. "As part of our investigation, we learned that these messages were sent through multiple providers in the United States. We are working closely with law enforcement to investigate this attack."

The prosecutor in charge added: "Our goal is to uncover all the facts and use all available means and resources to bring those responsible for these text messages to justice."

Nicole, whose daughter had received one of these text messages, explained that she was deeply disturbed by the news.

For her daughter, this was the first direct confrontation with such racism, and as a mother she did not really want to be forced to have such conversations with her children.

"It's like a slap in the face and shows me that the problem hasn't changed," says Nicole.

After receiving the message, her daughter said little about it, simply deleted it and went to bed.

"Racism is still a very present issue in our country. No matter how your child feels about it, welcome them with open arms, listen and be there for them, day in and day out," Nicole concluded.
