Hannah Kobayashi had planned to spend time with her aunt in New York in early November and took a flight from Maui to Los Angeles on November 8, CNN reports.

But after missing her connecting flight, the 31-year-old stayed behind in the US state of California and the onward flight to New York never took place.

One day after her scheduled flight, Hannah was spotted in a bookstore at "The Grove" shopping center in Los Angeles.

According to her sister Sydni, she was there transferring money to two unknown people. It remains unclear who they were and why she was in the bookshop.

Shortly afterwards, the 31-year-old disappeared without a trace, leaving her family with a series of mysterious messages that raised further questions.

A short time later, a video emerged showing the 31-year-old at an event in the shopping mall's Nike store, as well as a photo of shoes that she posted on her Instagram account .

On November 11 - the last day anyone heard from the woman - Hannah sent worrying messages to a friend.

She felt unsafe and someone was trying to steal her identity and money. More mysterious messages followed, giving the impression that she was in a difficult and potentially dangerous situation.

According to a Facebook post by her sister Sydni, the family received surveillance footage from the mall showing the missing woman not alone and apparently in a bad state.

Then on Sunday came the terrible news: Hannah's 58-year-old father, Ryan Kobayashi, was found dead. He had apparently fallen from a parking garage near the airport after searching tirelessly for his missing daughter for 13 days. The possibility of any outside involvement can be ruled out; according to the coroner, it was suicide. However, this raises the question of whether he may have known more than is currently known.

This tragic loss adds to the family's already unimaginable grief amid the desperate search for Hannah, who remains missing.

TAG24 does not normally report on possible suicides. As this is a missing persons case and the cause of the man's death has not yet been determined, the editorial team has decided to do so:
