As BBC News reports, the bear was on the driveway outside the couple's home and pounced on the woman when she went outside early in the morning to tend to their dogs.

The woman fell to the ground while her husband immediately jumped on the animal to stop the attack.

A neighbor saw this, rushed over with a gun and shot the bear several times.

The bear then retreated into a nearby forest, where it was later found dead.

Man was seriously injured in his legs and arms

The injured man was taken to hospital where his wounds were treated. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The small community of Fort Severn First Nation, with a population of about 400, has been badly shaken by the incident.

As a result, police have increased their patrols in the area to ensure that no more bears appear near the settlement.
