Brave heroine: Girl tries to save boy - now her life is in danger!
USA - A heroic rescue attempt ended tragically: an eleven-year-old girl tried to save a little boy from the ice and is now in a critical condition herself.
Last Saturday, the twelve-year-old broke through a sheet of ice on Washington Park Lake in the US state of New York.
As People reports, the girl came to the boy's aid and broke through the ice herself.
The fire department and police were quickly called to the scene, where they were able to rescue the eleven-year-old. Unfortunately, all help came too late for the boy, who had to be rescued by the underwater rescue team shortly afterwards.
The girl was treated at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital shortly afterwards. A police press release states that the eleven-year-old is in a critical condition.
Boy wanted to walk across the lake to a house
They further stated that the twelve-year-old had probably tried to walk across the lake to a house before breaking in.
Both children were students in the same school district. A crisis service is available to classmates and school staff. They can go there for support or to talk about the accident.
"Our hearts go out to the families of these students at this incredibly difficult time. This is a terrible tragedy and we are grieving as a school community," said a school spokesperson.
