As Daily Mail reports, Kaylee Muthart from the US state of South Carolina will never be able to see again. Instead of her eyes, she wears prostheses following the terrible incident.

Kaylee was once an outstanding student and was even inducted into the National Honor Society for her exceptional achievements.

However, she left school at the age of 17 in the hope of working more and saving money for college - a decision that would ultimately prove fatal.

Dropping out of school led her into the wrong circles. She began to party excessively often. This was followed by drug abuse , a nervous breakdown and self-harm.

Muthart was about to go to a rehab clinic, which her mother had persuaded her to go to.

But before that happened, she took a large dose of methamphetamine and hallucinated for hours.

In this state, she thought the right thing to do was to tear out her eyes. She pressed her thumbs, index and middle fingers into each eye, gripping the eyeballs, twisting and pulling until they popped out of their sockets.

It was a tremendous struggle, she later described, but she felt no pain as the drugs had a numbing effect.

Pastor discovered Kaylee Muthart screaming and prevented worse from happening

When a pastor found her, she was holding her eyeballs in her hands, which she had already crushed while they were still attached to her own head.

Kaylee was immediately taken to the hospital, where she struggled so violently that she had to be held down by seven people, restrained to the bed. She underwent emergency surgery to remove the remains of her eyes and prevent infection.

But despite the traumatic experience, she remains surprisingly positive and says she would rather be blind than addicted to drugs.
