End of career and Olympic expulsion: Is this scandalous swimmer returning?

Paraguay - At the Olympic Games in Paris, Paraguayan swimmer Luana Alonso (21) caused quite a stir off the pool with her sudden career end and her expulsion from the athletes' village. Now the scandalous pool noodle is apparently planning her sporting comeback.

"I'll be back next year," the 21-year-old replied in a Q&A on Instagram when asked whether she was planning to return to swimming - especially for the Olympic Games.

However, the South American immediately added one caveat: "I don't know yet whether I'll take part in professional competitions."

Although Alonso was born in the Paraguayan capital of Asunción, she learned her sporting craft at Virginia Tech University in the USA, where she competed in the college championships several times.

She made her Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2021 and was part of the team again in Paris three years later. However, she was unable to make big waves in the water and missed out on the semi-finals each time, whereupon she announced her retirement in 2024.

In France, however, this is said to have done nothing to dampen her spirits. She explored the city, visited the Eiffel Tower and apparently also the famous Disneyland theme park.

The Paraguayan National Olympic Committee (COP) was not at all pleased and unceremoniously kicked Alonso out of the Olympic village. President Camilo Pérez (56) explained in a radio interview that the young swimmer's behavior was "inappropriate" and "unprofessional".

However, the 21-year-old subsequently claimed that she had left voluntarily. The Paraguayan online medium"Hoy" speculated that the dispute could also be linked to earlier statements made by Alonso.

In some internet videos and comments, she indicated that she would rather represent the USA than Paraguay in sport.
