Fears for mountain village, cow flown out: Glacier disaster now looming

Blatten (Valais/Switzerland) - Following the evacuation of all residents of the village of Blatten in the Swiss canton of Valais, there is still no relief in sight. On Thursday, authorities continue to provide information about the still imminent rockfall from the Kleine Nesthorn and warn of a threatening glacier fall.

"What is quite certain is that the glacier is being pushed forward in the front area," said natural hazards engineer Alban Brigger in a press conference broadcast on SRF and Blick . However, it is still unclear whether only the glacier front or the entire glacier is moving.

According to Brigger, rockfalls are still occurring, but at least on the west side of the mountain, they are now very likely to be stable. According to the SRF report, at least two million cubic meters of rock have already fallen on the eastern side.

However, authorities are still concerned about a mass of ice that could slide off the mountain. Rockfalls could cause the Birch Glacier below to be swept away.

The village of Blatten therefore remains in danger despite the lack of damage.

Due to the threat, the village in the Lötschental was completely evacuated on Monday. 300 inhabitants were evacuated.

Animals also had to be brought to safety. A cow in the vicinity of the village was even given a helicopter flight. According to the SRF report, residents were asked to strictly avoid the exclusion zone.

According to the authorities, a return to the village could only be considered once the situation had calmed down considerably.
