Palermo - A German tourist has died while on vacation on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily.

The 36-year-old man died of carbon monoxide poisoning in a house in the municipality of Cefalù near the island's capital Palermo, according to the police. Three other German holidaymakers - two women aged 34 and 60 and a 63-year-old man - had to be taken to hospital.
The exact cause of the accident was initially unclear. The fire department suspected that smoke from a chimney was the cause of the poisoning. According to them, the chimney was thick with smoke when the first rescuers arrived at the house.
The three injured people were taken to hospitals in the area for treatment. Their condition was described as serious.
The authorities did not initially provide any information about their origin.
The 15,000-inhabitant municipality of Cefalù on the north coast of the island is considered one of the most beautiful communities in Sicily. Many tourists stay there in winter too.
