GEZ increase canceled! Minister presidents against
Germany - The planned GEZ increase has been canceled! The state premiers have agreed on this.
Until the very end, the representatives of public broadcasting insisted on an increase in the broadcasting fee of 58 cents to 18.94 euros per month - now the U-turn.
As Bild first reported, the state premiers have now spoken out against an increase in the fee.
Stephan Weil (65, SPD), head of government of Lower Saxony, confirmed this to Bild.
This means that everything will remain the same (for the time being): a monthly fee of 18.36 euros. Instead, there will be a new model for adjusting fees from 2027, Bild reports further.
However, it is questionable whether the fee-financed media will accept the MP's decision. ARD and ZDF have filed a lawsuit with the Federal Constitutional Court for an increase.
In 2023, the public broadcasters received around 9 billion euros from broadcasting fees. The GEZ contribution was last increased in 2021.
