As reported by Salzburg Mountain Rescue, four adults and two children aged nine and 16 from Austria and Germany set off on Saturday to climb to the summit of the Schafberg. They were dressed only in shorts and sneakers.

However, the group completely underestimated the weather conditions. They lost their bearings in the thick fog and ended up in steep terrain that was still snow-covered in places. Fearing a possible fall, they did not dare to continue.

The falling temperatures caused additional uncertainty. At around 4.30 p.m., one of the fathers finally made an emergency call.

The mountain rescuers secured the route with a rope railing and accompanied the hikers safely down the valley.

A police helicopter brought the mountain rescuers to the scene. They secured the route with a rope railing and accompanied the hikers to a spot from where they were flown down into the valley by helicopter.

All those involved remained unharmed. However, the families are likely to remember this excursion for a long time to come.
