As reported by the Daily Mail, Jake Brown was in the swimming area with a friend and sat on the buoys that marked the area of the shark nets.

With the words "Hold my beer", the 29-year-old jumped into the water shortly afterwards to cool off - a fatal mistake.

The young man apparently got caught in the barrier and never resurfaced. He drowned as the current carried his body into the open sea.

Passers-by desperately tried to help him, but were unable to find him as he was swept under the net by the current.

Four hours later, after a large-scale search operation involving the water police, helicopters and divers, the 29-year-old was finally rescued.

The City of Gold Coast is now working closely with the police to investigate the exact circumstances of the tragic incident. They are also looking into how safety measures around the grove net can be improved to prevent similar accidents in the future.
