The perpetrator is said to have set fire to the victim's clothes with a lighter, as reported byCNN.

Just a few seconds later, the entire clothing was on fire. Officers spotted the smoke and wanted to see where it was coming from, then they saw the woman on fire.

They managed to extinguish the fire, but by then it was already too late. The emergency services who arrived could only pronounce her dead.

The suspect was even still at the scene of the crime, as bodycam footage later revealed. He was sitting on a bench directly on the platform outside the carriage.

The emergency services had not noticed him at first during their zealous rescue operation. However, the footage gave them a "clear and detailed picture of the killer".

Footage from the subway itself shows that the victim lay motionless during the attack. After setting the woman on fire, the ice-cold killer walked out of the carriage, sat down and watched her burn to death.

The suspected murderer is currently being questioned

The suspect was arrested around eight hours after the terrible crime. The recordings of the crime were the decisive factor.

The police released one of the surveillance videos and were contacted by three students who had recognized the suspect on a train in the city centre. When he was arrested, he had a lighter in his pocket.

The suspected murderer has been questioned at a police station in Brooklyn since Sunday evening. The identity of the deceased has not yet been established.

"This kind of reprehensible behavior has no place in our subways, and we are determined to work hard to ensure that all victims of violent crime receive swift justice," said New York Mayor Eric Adams in a statement on the X platform.
