19-year-old Connor Lotterman was shot in the head in the horrific incident in the US state of Michigan.

As Wood TV reported, the fatal shot was fired from an upstairs bedroom. Several shots had reportedly been fired through the floor beforehand.

Police arrived at the scene, which is about ten kilometers from the university, at around 11 p.m. and arrested a 20-year-old suspect.

Lotterman was immediately taken to hospital, but due to the severity of his injuries he died around a week ago - just a few days before his 20th birthday.

Although his death was officially classified as an accident, investigators assume that the shot was deliberately fired. Alcohol consumption is also believed to have played a significant role.

"It wasn't as if just one shot had been fired accidentally - several shots were fired. Even though the death was ultimately classified as an accident, the shooting itself was clearly intentional," explained a police spokesperson.

Officers and the public prosecutor's office are currently investigating whether criminal charges can be brought against the suspected shooter.
