Lack of space in the overhead compartment: what this passenger is doing doesn't suit the owner
Net - Can you simply rearrange someone else's hand luggage on an airplane? A passenger was confronted with precisely this question when he took action during a flight.
In a Reddit post , the anonymous user described his experience - and met with mixed reactions.
The passenger said that he had tried to make room for another person's luggage when he noticed that a piece of hand luggage was taking up a disproportionate amount of space.
"A woman on my flight placed her clearly too large hand luggage on its side. So I tried to put it upright to help another person place their bag on top," said the user.
A flight attendant was informed of the situation and initially assisted the gentleman. But shortly afterwards, the owner of the bag spoke up: "Oh, that's mine, I didn't put it down like that."
There was no room for more luggage
The passenger recalled that the flight attendant then told the woman that she would have to check the bag into the hold if it did not fit vertically in the overhead compartment.
"I had it sideways," replied the owner. The flight attendant then agreed with him and he returned the bag to its original position - again leaving no room for any more luggage.
"I've never heard of a rule that says we can't work together to adjust everyone's luggage. (...) I was trying to make room because it was for an elderly lady," the passenger defended himself in his post.
Although he felt vindicated in his actions, the post sparked a debate in the comments.
"My advice would be not to pick other people's pockets," wrote one user. Others, however, showed understanding: "The oversized carry-on bags that don't fit are a nuisance for everyone. (...) But it would be so easy to solve the problem."
