Together with her husband John E. Hubbard (40) and their two young children, Shannon Hubbard went on vacation to the Airbnb apartment of Meredith Darcy (55) and Dennis Darcy (57) in October 2024.

But on the evening of the 13th, a fire broke out and the family was trapped in the flames, according to the New York State Police (NYSP) on Thursday (local time). Together with the East Clinton Fire Department and the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division, they tried to rescue the family from the burning apartment.

All four were taken to a hospital. There, however, Shannon Hubbard and her daughter succumbed to their injuries. Her husband and son survived.

According to People, the landlords of the apartment allegedly lied about the smoke alarms. The NYSP stated that the apartment was "not properly equipped with working smoke detectors." According to fire investigators, a fire in the chimney was the cause of the accident.

Meredith and Dennis Darcy were arrested on two counts of second-degree manslaughter.
