In the morning, he ordered "precision airstrikes" on a high-ranking member responsible for IS attacks as well as "other terrorists he recruited and led in Somalia", Trump explained on his online service Truth Social on Saturday. "Many terrorists" were killed in the attack.

According to Defense Minister Pete Hegseth (44), the US attacks targeted IS members in the Golis Mountains in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland.

"Our initial assessment is that several attackers were killed in the airstrikes, but no civilians were harmed," explained Hegseth.

The USA is "always prepared to find and eliminate terrorists who threaten the United States and our allies".

The presence of IS in Somalia is relatively small compared to the equally Islamist Shebab militia, which is close to the al-Qaeda terror network, but experts warn of growing activity.

"The message to Isis and anyone else who wants to attack Americans is: 'We will find you, and we will kill you'," Trump wrote.
