Medical emergency in the stadium: Fans fall from the stands, referee interrupts the match

Turin (Italy) - A stadium accident in Italy's top flight of soccer , rescue operation off the pitch: An accident occurred in the stands during the Serie A match between FC Turin and Inter Milan.

Two Torino supporters fell from the home middle tier onto a group of spectators in the lower tier shortly after kick-off yesterday evening, whereupon the referee, Federico La Penna (41), briefly interrupted the match in the 26,537-capacity Olympic Stadium after just two minutes.

According to several media outlets, the two "Curva Maratona" fans who fell from the balustrade were largely unharmed. However, three stadium visitors suffered bruises in the accident.

One of them was injured and taken to a local general hospital. However, there are as yet no further details on their state of health.

Investigations into the cause of the accident have been launched, according to media reports.

The club's camp in the Piedmontese capital is now waiting impatiently for the all-clear, including Turin head coach Paolo Vanoli (52): "I wish our fan the best of luck, we hope everything turns out well," said the 52-year-old coach, expressing his dismay at the incident.

"We're trying to get information, we hope everything goes well," Vanoli continued after the final whistle of his team's 2-0 home defeat.
