According to the airline KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the plane took off from the Norwegian capital Oslo with the aim of landing in Amsterdam(Netherlands) the previous Saturday evening. However, the Boeing 737 never arrived there.

Once in the air, it was decided to divert the plane to Sandefjord-Torp airport, south of Oslo. Although the plane touched down there successfully, it was apparently unable to slow down in time.

"After landing, the Boeing 737 left the runway at low speed and hit the grass," it said. The 176 passengers and six crew members on board were uninjured, according to the operators.

Passengers on board the ill-fated plane have been evacuated.
