Sky News and BBC reported on the incident yesterday morning (local time) in the city of Vallejo, California.

The band was on their way to the first date of their tour near Sacramento and stopped for breakfast at a Starbucks. A passer-by opened the door to the store and asked: "Does anyone have a white Sprinter van? Because you're being robbed," drummer Al Greenwood told the BBC.

The musicians then ran outside and started screaming, according to the drummer. Someone was already approaching them there, saying, "Watch out, he's got something in his hand." According to reports, the robber threatened the tour manager, who was the first to arrive at the van, at gunpoint.

Another member of the band filmed the incident and posted the footage online. In the video, employees from the Starbucks can be heard asking the group to leave the street and come back inside. "It was very confusing because they just went on with their shift," Greenwood said.

"When someone pulls out a gun, of course you take cover," singer Alex Rice told the BBC. "But the thing that struck me was the resignation. The people around us weren't panicking at all. It seemed like an everyday incident."

According to the group, the robber smashed the passenger window of their tour bus and was mainly after electronic equipment. Members of "Sports Team" were also robbed of their passports, clothing and other personal belongings.

The robbers spared their instruments - these were kept in a separate, locked compartment in the van. The police later advised the robbed indie band to fill out an online form about the theft. Officers would not have come to the scene of the crime themselves.

The tour is to continue despite the uncomfortable US start. "We will continue to play," said Rice. "We have nothing against the Bay Area. We think it's great here - but it's sad that it's come to this with gun violence."
