Telekom with "MagentaTV" has secured the TV rights for the World Cup matches broadcast in Germany, according to several media outlets citing information from"Bild". However, this has not yet been officially confirmed.

An official announcement of the deal with the world governing body FIFA is therefore planned for next Friday.

It is also not clear whether all upcoming matches will be available on the paid streaming provider.

Sublicenses for ARD and ZDF possible

Telekom will probably grant sub-licenses to other TV broadcasters. The Bonn-based company had already done this with the TV rights for the 2024 European Championship, when ARD and ZDF were allowed to broadcast matches from the tournament.

According to the Interstate Broadcasting Treaty, all matches of the German national team, the opening match as well as the semi-finals and the final must be broadcast on "free-to-air and generally accessible television programs". These matches are considered to be events of "considerable social significance".

Next year's World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19. With 48 teams, there will be more nations playing for the World Cup title than ever before.
