Temu recalls sweater after girl (8) suffers severe burns

Hervey Bay (Australia) - It was intended as a birthday present and almost turned out to be fatal. An eight-year-old's favorite sweater caught fire and caused severe burns. Manufacturer Temu, a controversial online retailer, has now recalled the product.

Daniella Jacobs-Herd received the "Glow in the Dark" unicorn sweater from Temu from her grandmother for her eighth birthday last year. The grandmother hit the bull's eye, because as mother Hannah Jacobs-Herd told ABC News, the girl wore the garment almost constantly.

Until the sweater suddenly started to burn. At a birthday party with a bonfire, a spark landed on the sweater decorated with unicorns and it ignited in a flash.

The shocked mother reports that the garment began to melt like a plastic bag. Her daughter, who was trapped in the sweater, sustained injuries that affected up to 13 percent of her body, including her face and upper body. The guests had to watch as the skin fell off her body.

Operations are necessary. According to the doctors, it can take up to ten years for the skin to be fully restored.

Temu's reaction to the accident: none at first. It was not until four months later that the dangerous hoodie was taken out of the range.

Sweater violates Australian standards

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) subsequently investigated the sweater and found that it did not meet Australian standards or have a fire warning label.

"How can it be that a child has to suffer burns before products are recalled and mixed in?" the mother told ABC News, expressing her horror.

In the meantime, the family has called in lawyers and is trying to reach an agreement with Temu. She is not just interested in money, but in ensuring that her daughter can have a future.

The family set up a GoFundMe donation account last summer for further operations.

According to 9News, Temu is in talks with the injured parties and is also working with the ACCC to clarify the problem and find solutions.
