However, the offensive fireworks from both teams were marred by unsightly incidents off the pitch.

While the players struggled down below and delivered a thrilling game to the crowd in the Groupama Arena, which was packed with 18,657 spectators, tumultuous scenes are said to have broken out in the stands.

As several videos circulating on the internet show, fans from Alkmaar who had traveled with the team had a violent altercation with the security forces present at the venue.

However, the brawl was not caused by the visiting supporters. At least that's what the Dutch top-flight club claims - while also making accusations that emerge from an official statement.

"We condemn the excessively violent actions of the local stewards," the club announced on the social media platform X after the final whistle and also explained that the incidents had been reported during the match.

A complaint had been lodged with both UEFA and the local police.

The accusations are backed up by video footage that can be found online. It shows stewards indiscriminately beating up AZ supporters. However, the motives behind this extremely questionable action are not known.

According to several reports, Budapest supporters seeking violence posed as stewards at the match in order to gain access to the visitors' block. However, this has not yet been confirmed either.
