Tina Lewis, a Canadian trail runner and influencer, reported on Instagram about an unexpected incident that overshadowed her adventure in India.

After months of traveling, she got into trouble with the airport authorities when she arrived in Goa and a mini GPS device was discovered in her bag.

What was an everyday companion for her on her travels turned out to be an illegal item - due to an Indian law that is almost a hundred years old.

Tina had used the 'Garmin inReach' device on many of her international camping trips and felt safer without cell phone reception in remote mountain regions.

Hours of investigation followed, and at midnight she was finally released with the help of a lawyer - a contact from a friend, as she reported.

After several days of court hearings , her case was finally resolved.

However, her passport was only returned to her later and she had to pay thousands of dollars in court fines and legal fees. She also did not get her Garmin device back.

Lewis now warned her followers on Instagram and used the incident to show how important it is to find out about local laws - especially when taking technical devices with you.
