Charlotte May Lee is accused of smuggling 46 kilograms of cannabis in her suitcase. Customs officers discovered the drugs in her luggage when she was stopped at the airport. Since then, the 21-year-old has been in prison awaiting trial.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Charlotte explained that she had "no idea" that the drug was in her suitcase. "I'd never seen it before," she said, adding, "I didn't expect it when they stopped me at the airport either."

The young British woman was firmly convinced that her luggage was just stuffed with personal belongings. "I was in Bangkok the night before and had already packed my things because my flight left very early. So I left my bags in my hotel room and went out. As everything was packed, I didn't check them in the morning," she explained.

The 21-year-old suspects that the drugs were placed in her suitcase unnoticed during this time - and even claims to know who did it. However, she did not give any further details.

Charlotte told the British daily that she traveled to Sri Lanka when her 30-day visa for Thailand expired. She wanted to spend the waiting time for her visa extension there and explore the country at the same time. But then everything turned out differently.

After being arrested at the airport, she spent the next seven days in the police drug squad office, where she had to sleep on a sofa infested with bedbugs.

She was then transferred to Negombo prison, in an overcrowded cell. She stated that she had not eaten for two days because the prison food made her sick as it was too spicy. She asked her lawyers to get her other food, but so far no help has been forthcoming.

"I'm trying my best to stay positive, because what else is there to do?" she said, "But it's hard. I feel like I have no human rights here. There are no beds, no blankets. I literally sleep on concrete floors. I only have my sweater as a pillow."

How exactly the 21-year-old got into her current situation remains unclear at first. However, Charlotte suspects that the drugs were planted on her while her luggage was left unattended in her hotel room. The first court proceedings could take place in July. The investigation is in full swing.
