Family gets out of an Uber: Driver suddenly darts off with sleeping daughter (5)

Toronto (Canada) - It is probably one of every parent's biggest nightmares: Julia Viscomi's (38) five-year-old daughter suddenly disappeared.

As People reported, the mother was traveling home in an Uber with her partner and her two children, little Amelia and her seven-year-old son, in March. The girl had fallen asleep.

As soon as they arrived at the family home, Viscomi and her partner got out. While the 38-year-old went to the garage door, her boyfriend looked after the boy. Viscomi then wanted to get little Amelia from the back seat.

Too bad the Uber driver was only half paying attention. As Viscomi had already moved away from the car, he started the engine after her partner got out with their son - and drove off with little Amelia in the back seat.

Viscomi's heart immediately sank. At first, she hoped that the driver would notice the mistake and turn around. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. And so the panicked mother turned to Uber.

The problem: for data protection reasons, the employees of the ride service app refused to give out the driver's number. So Viscomi had no choice but to call the police .

Fortunately, the officers reacted immediately.

A full 80 minutes after the SUV had driven off with little Amelia on board, the car was tracked.

The girl was safe and sound and fell into her mother's arms shortly afterwards.

In the course of the investigation, it turned out that this was apparently just a mistake. As the five-year-old had been asleep, the driver had probably not noticed that she was still in the car.

A huge relief for Viscomi. Even today, two months after the incident, tears well up in her eyes as soon as she thinks back to it. "I was afraid I would never see her again."

She has hardly heard anything from Uber since then, only a meagre compensation in the form of a 10-dollar voucher. "That was really insulting. It wasn't about a bag I'd left [in the car]. It was about a child's life."
