Reporters from Madrid and Barcelona reported to Deutsche Presse-Agentur that there was no power on Monday afternoon.

This affected telephone lines, the internet, 5G networks and the Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Madrid, which was initially interrupted.

Parts of the subway in Madrid are said to have been evacuated and traffic lights broke down, which in turn caused traffic chaos in many places.

The Spanish newspaper "El País" spoke of a "massive power outage".

Further information on the extent of the power outage and the cause was not initially available to dpa.
