The German had to hold out in the freezing cold for six hours. Then help finally arrived.

For a German, the adventure in Chile ended just about as lightly as it could have, reports the local portal"El Sol de Iquique". The 78-year-old was traveling alone in his camper van near the Olca volcano (5407 metres) on the border with Bolivia. Suddenly a storm hit him. The road became a muddy track. There was no way forward.

The tourist dialed the emergency number, gave his coordinates and a patrol car made its way to the remote spot.

But the rescuers only arrived after six long hours. When they found the motorhome, the 78-year-old was suffering from hypothermia. He was treated on the spot. They then pulled the trapped car out of the mud using a winch.
